Abstract

646,877. Hones. MICROMATIC HONE CORPORATION. May 12, 1948, No. 13004. Convention date, May 21, 1947. [Class 60] A tool for honing a cylindrical bore comprises a body 7 with two separate sets 17, 21 of radially - movable elem e n t s, separate means for controlling the movement of each set of elements, and a single actuator for the separate means to permit either simultaneous movement of both sets of elements or movement of one set relatively to the other set. The body is rotated and reciprocated by a machine of the type described in Specification 623,629 and the single means for adjustment, which is in the form of a rod 11, is provided with an adjustable coupling 13 for connection to the machine. This rod 11 is pinned to a cylindrical plug 27 having inclined 'slots 25 for the elements 17 and parallel slots 33 to receive cam elements 31 having inclined faces to engage the elements 21. The upper ends of the cam elements are formed as inwardly-turned' hooks to accommodate with clearance a flange 41 on a member 39. The latter is in' threaded engagement with a collar 69 and a cap 55. The collar serves to restrain a spring 67 the lower end of which bears against a washer supported by the cam elements while the cap forms' one-half of a conically-faced clutch, the other half of which is formed by two or more friction shoes 51. A gauging device is provided comprising a caliper-like or ring-like element 75 which is engaged by the elements 21 at the top of their stroke when the work is to size to stop the machine. The elements 21 form a surface of larger diameter than that formed by the elements 17 so that as. the tool enters the bore to be honed it is stabilized by them. When the machine is put into operation, the rod 11 is moved downwardly to expand the elements 17 and, through the clutch and the member 39, the elements 21 until the pressure on the latter attains a predetermined value. At this time, relative movement occurs between the shoes 51 and the rod 11 so that only the elements 17 are further expanded, relative movement also occurring between the cam elements and the plug. As enlargement of the bore proceeds, the pressure on the elements 21 is diminished until they can again be expanded through the clutch gripping the rod 11. When the bore is of the required size, the plug is lifted to contract the elements 17. The elements 21, however, are held in contact with the bore by the spring 67 which keeps the cam elements 31 depressed until the clearance between the flange 41 and the elements 31 is taken up, whereupon the tool is withdrawn with the elements 21 protecting the finish 11 of the bore against damage by inadvertant contact with the elements 17. The elements 21 may be of metal, fibre or fine abrasive. If fine abrasive is used, the final stage of the honing may be carried out with the elements 17 contracted. U.S.A. Specification 2,308,356 also is referred to.
