Abstract
1,074,559. Honing. MICROMATIC HONE CORPORATION. Oct. 11, 1965 [Jan. 21, 1965], No. 42940/65. Heading B3D. A honing machine comprises a honing tool with a honing tool body having a longitudinal opening extending therethrough and including longitudinally extending circumferentially spaced slots, a number of honing stones, a plate for each honing stone, the plates extending through the slots and inwardly terminating in cone blade engaging means, a cone extending within the longitudinal opening, the cone including circumferentially spaced blades, the blades having cam surfaces engaging corresponding cam surfaces on the plates, whereby only one set of honing stones is expanded at a time. A honing tool has rough honing stones 74, finish honing stones 74<SP>1</SP> and guides 75. The stones are mounted in stone holders 73 mounted on plates 72, each having cam surfaces 71 (71<SP>1</SP>). The expanding cone comprises two sets of blades 69, (69<SP>1</SP>) having cam surfaces (70, 70<SP>1</SP>). In one position, the blades are operative to expand the stones 74 and in an angularly displaced position the blades are operative to expand the stones 74<SP>1</SP>. A ring (24), mounted on a part (14) of the tool spindle carries a pin (20) extending through an opening (21) in the part (14) into a vertical groove (19) of a part (18) of the cone push-rod. At the end of rough honing, during which the stones 74 are expanded, the direction of rotation of the tool spindle is reversed and pneumatic pressure from a line (11) is caused to urge a brake shoe (26) against the ring (24), thus altering the angular relationship of the tool spindle and cone push-rod to set up for expanding the stones 74<SP>1</SP>. The two settings are maintained by a pin (40) mounted in a part (37) of the tool spindle and engaging one or other of vertical grooves (39, 39<SP>1</SP>) in a part (35) of the cone push-rod. In a modification (Fig. 11), upward movement of the cone push-rod (77) expands one set of honing stones and downward movement of the rod retracts them and expands the other set. In another modification (Fig. 12) a cone push-rod (81) is oriented by manually moving a ring (82) when the tool body (84) is stationary. In another modification (Fig. 16) orientation of a cone push-rod (89) is effected by vertical movement of a bracket (91).
