Abstract
529,681. Honing cylinders. MICROMATIC HONE CORPORATION. June 6, 1939, No. 16584. Convention date, Feb. 23. [Class 60] In honing cylinders the last strokes of the hone are not accompanied by rotation so that the final scratch marks are parallel to the axis of the cylinder. The expanding hone is so constructed that all parts of the cylinder are treated during the final stage and the machine is designed to effect the change in operation at a pre-determined time and to stop at the end of the cycle. The segments of the expanding hone have projections 84, 85, Fig. 6, alternating on opposite sides the projections and recesses in adjacent segments overlapping at all stages in the expansion. The segments are secured in carriers 78 received between projections 68, 69, Fig. 3, on a sleeve 67 having a driving connection through balls and recesses 70, that permit slight universal movement, with a sleeve 38. The segments are expanded by pins 82 and a wedge core 72 having a ball and socket connection at 75 with an axial rod 65. Garter springs 81 tend to collapse the hone. The hones are circumferentially grooved at 89. A modified hone for use in blind bores has the segments suspended by pins 103, Fig. 7, and expanded by pins 97, 99 engaging recesses in the carrier; flats 98 prevent the pins from turning, and a single garter spring 102 is provided. In a further modification also for use in blind bores the lower set of pins transmit movement to the segments through pivoted members so that the expanding pressure is applied close to the bottom edge. The expansion is effected by fluid pressure admitted at 26, Fig. 2 to a cylinder formed by sleeves 22, 24 mounted between ball thrust bearings 23, 29 so as not to rotate with the tool body 21 which has a driving-connection at 17 with the shank 16. Rotation of the piston 27 is prevented by pins and slots 36 which also limit its movement which is transmitted by a sleeve 34, pin 47, sleeve 46, pins 58, balls 55, nut 54, threaded sleeve 52, and pin 51 to the rod 65. A spring pressed ball 61 co-operates with recesses 59 to prevent unwanted rotation of the nut after adjustment has been effected. A spring 31 acts to return the piston 27. Rotational drive is transmitted from the body 21 to the sleeve 38 through balls and recesses 39, the balls being retained by a sleeve 41 moved down against a stop 42 by pins 43 forming a connection with a sleeve 44. The shank of the tool is connected to a piston rod 119 reciprocated by a fluid pressure cylinder 116 and rotated through gearing 120 driven from a motor through a clutch 122. A time switch 123 acts through a solenoid 125 to throw out the clutch after a pre-determined time causing the lap to reciprocate without rotation until stopped by a time switch 124 acting through a solenoid 126 on the valve 127.
