This invention appertains to devices for honing the walls of cylinders, such as the cylinders of internal combustion engines, pumps and the like, to render the same true '5" and uniform in contour throughout the length thereof.
One of the primary objects of my invention is to provide a novel device for honing the walls of cylinders embodying novel means for initially adjusting the position of the hone relative to the cylinder walls and novel means for withdrawing the hone from engagement with the Walls incident to the removal and insertion of the tool in the cylinder. Another important object of my invention is the provisionof automtic means for releasing the hone incident to the raising and lowering of the tool into and out of the cylinder, said means embodying a longitudinal slidable sleeve normally rotatable on the shank of the tool with means for stopping the rotation of the sleeve relative to the shank when the tool is being raised or lowered, the sleeve having operative connection through the medium of a slide cone with the hones for bringing the hones into and out of engagement with the cylinder wall.
A further object of the invention is the provision of novel means for connecting and disconnecting the sleeve with the shank according to the position of the tool in the cylinder and novel means including a brake for holding the sleeve against rotation when the sleeve is released from driving connection with the shank.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an improved cylinder honing device of the above character, which will be durable and efiicient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction,

Referring to thedrawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates my improved tool and B a fragment of a machine with which the'same can be used, and G a cylinder which is being honed, the cylinder being shown in dotted lines.
My tool can be used in connection with a number of different types of operating machines and in the present instance I have illustrated the same associated with a drill press, and the same includes a work receiving table 10, a vertical movable head 11 carrying the rotatable drill receiving chuck 12 withwhich, in the present instance, the tool is associated.
My improved tool A comprises a main axially disposed drive shank 15 having a bit 16 formed on its upper end for connection with the chuck 12 of the drill press; The shank 15 at a point intermediate the bit 16 and the body portion is provided with a reduced section 17 forming an annular stop shoulder 18. The lower end of the shank 15 is provided with an inwardly directed bore 19 which has communicating therewith adj a cent to its upper end a longitudinally extend ing slot 20 and adjacent to its lower end with radially extending openings 21 for a purpose which will be later described. The wall of the bore at the lower end thereof is internally threaded as at 22 which detachably receives a cap 23 which closes the lower end of said bore.
The shank 15 has integrally formed on its lower end the tool carrying head 24 which head is of a substantially cylindrical shape having radially extending longitudinally disposed tool receiving slots25 therein. At a point equidistant its ends the tool head 24 is provided with a. circumferentially extending slot 26 which communicates with the tool receiving slots 25. The slots 25 receive the radially extending longitudinally disposed tool or hone carrying casings or supports 27 and as shown the same are substantially U-shaped in cross section for receiving the honing stones 28. The stones preferably have their terminals rounded and have one longitudinal face thereof protruding beyond the tool carriers or casings 27 The rear walls of the carriers are provided with oppositely extending arms 29 which receive the removable annular contractile coil springs 30 and these springs normally act to hold the carriers 27 in a retracted position in the slots 25. The side walls of the carriers have formed thereon laterally extending guide pins 31 which are removably seated in the annular or circumferentially extending slot 26. This prevents longitudinal shifting of the carriers on the tool head 24. At this time it is to be noted that the openings 21 formed in the shank communicate with the radially extending tool receiving slots 25 and that these openings receive slide pins 32 which bear against the rear walls of the tool carriers 27 and extend into the bore 19 of the shank. The bore of the shank slidably receives a follower 33 having a conical bearing end 34 against which the pins 32 seat, being held against said cone by the contraction of the annular coil springs 30.
The follower cone 33 is normally held in a raised position with its smallest end in engagement with the slide pins 32 by the use of a relatively heavy expansion coil spring This spring bears against a washer 36 at its upper end which fits against the lower tapered end of the cone follower while the outer end ofthe spring fits against the closure cap 23. The upper end of the conical follower 33 carries a rearwardly extending guide pin 37 which pin extends through the slot 20 formed in the shank 15.
Slidably mounted upon the shank 15 is an elongated sleeve 40, the lower end of which is provided with a cam face 41, the meeting of the high point and the low point of the cam track forming an abutment shoulder 42. The pin 37 normally bears against the cam faceand the abutment shoulder 42 is adapted to contact with said pin at certain times for a purpose which will be later described. The upper end of the sleeve 40 is provide with longitudinally extending diametrically opposed guide slots 43 which open out through. the upper end of the sleeve and the sleeve is preferably provided with externalthreads44fora purpose which will also be described. The slots receive slid-e bars 45 and av collar 46 is rotatably mounted on the shank 17 above said sleeve and is provided witn a reduced portion 47 which extends around the shank between the sleeve 40 and said shank with the inner end thereof normally resting upon the abutment shoulder 18 formed by the reduced portion 17 of the shank. iriountcd upon the upper end of the sleeve is a brake drum 48 which drum is connected to the reduced port-ion of the colla 46 by means of radially extending pins 4!), the pins likewis extending through the slide bars mounted in the slots 43 of the sleeve. Thus by this connection. the brake drum secur d to the sleeve 40 for rotation therewith and also permits the longitudinal adjustment of the sleeve relative thereto. The
djustment of the sleeve is initially controlled by means of a hand nut which is threaded the threads 44 and this nut is adapted to bear against the lower end of the brake drum for initially adjusting the position of the sleeve relative to said brake drum and consequently the position of the lower cam. end of the sleev relative to the pin 37.
Surrounding the brake-drum 48 is a brake band 56 ha viug a brake lining 57 for normally engaging the drum. The brake band is of an open a nular form and has secured to or formed on its terminals radially extending arms 58 and The arm 58 is of a relatively long nature and has rigidly secured thereto a bracket or supporting arm (30. The arm 59 is of relatively short nature and is connected to the arm 58 by means of a bolt 61, by means of which the band can be adjusted for bringing the brake lining into proper contact with the brake drum. The adjustment of the brake bond is such as to hold the sleeve normally against rotation when the same is not forcibly rotated. but which will not prevent the rotation of the sleeve when the same is driven by power. Rotatably mounted on the she it above the collar 46 is a drive disk 63 which acts in the nature of a clutch and this drive d is operatively connected to the shank 1.) through the medium of coil spring 64 which has its opposite ends connected respectively to the shank and to said drive disk. The lower face of the drive disk 63 is provided with a depending pin 65 which is adapted to be urged toward and into pin socket (3%; formed in the upper face of the collar 46. The drive disk 63 is provided with an an nular groove 69 which receives the bearing pins 70 of the yoke 71 which is rockably connected at a point intermediate its ends, as at 72, on the bracket 60 secured to the brake arm 58.
The brake arm 58 has rigidly secured thereto a bracket 73 which is bolted or otherwise attached to a non-rotatable part of the drill press, such as in the present instance the head 11 which is movable toward and away from the table 10, so that the brake will be raised and lowered with the shank 15 when the shank is raised and lowered by the socket 12. The outer end of the yoke lever 71 is connected through the medium of a cable 7 4 and atension spring 75 with the table 10, so that upon slight movement of the shank in an upward direction a pull will be exerted on the lever and yoke for lifting the drive disk 6.3 above the collar 46 and the pin 65 out of the pin socket 66 to discontinue the drive be tween the shank and the sleeve 40, whereby the brake will function to prevent further rotation of said sleeve.
It is obvious that according to the position of the cam track relative to the pin 37 will depend the position of the follower cone relative to the push pins 32 and consequently the position of the hones relative to the cylinder wall and in operation of the device the nut 55 is initially adjusted for raising and lowering the sleeve 40 to initially adjust the position of the hones according to the diameter of the cylinder. After the adjusting of the hones initially, the tool being in its raised position and the clutch disconnected from the collar 46, the tool is lowered into the cylinder and as the tension is released on the yoke 71 by the coil spring 75, the tension of the spring 64 will function to urge the pin 65 toward the socket 66 and when the machine is started in operation the clutch collar or disk 63 will rotate with the shank and when the pin comes in alinement with the socket the same will swing into the same and consequently bring about the synchronous rotation of the sleeve 40 and the shank. After the cylinder has been honed and it is desired to again raise the tool, the head 11 of the drill press is moved upwardly and upon this movement the yoke will again be immediately rocked causing the lifting of the pin 65 out of the socket and the spring 64 being under tension will immediately move the pin slightly out of alinement with the socket. This disconnects the positive drive of the shank from the sleeve and the brake will then hold the sleeve against movement and the pin will ride off the high point of the cam into the low point thereof, due to the continued rotation of the shank under the momentum thereof. What I claim as new is:
'1; A tool for honing cylinders comprising a shank having a bit at one end for connection with a drive socket, a tool head at the outer end of said shank, hone carriers slidably carried by said head and movable toward and away from the longitudinal axis of said'head, springmeans normally urgingthe carriers toward the longitudinal axis of the head, a follower cone slidably mounted in said shank, thrust pins engaging the follower'and said hone carriers, spring means normally urging the follower away from said thrust. pins, a radially extending guide pin on the follower, a sleeve slidable and rotatable on the shank having a cam face formed on its lower end for engaging said pin, means for connecting the sleeve with the shank for rotation therewith including a clutch disk resiliently conneeted with the shank having a pin for drivin connection with the sleeve, means for raising and lowering the clutch disk for mov- 1 ing the same from out of driving connection with the sleeve, and a brake for holding the sleeve against rotation when the clutch disk is out of driving connection with said sleeve.
2. In a honing device for cylinders, a drive shank having a tool head at one end provided with radial slots and a bore, hone carriers slidably mounted in the slots, spring means engaging the carriers normally urging the same to a retracted position in said slots,
thrust pins engaging the carriers and having their inner ends arranged in the bore, a cone follower shdably mounted in said bore for engaglng the thrust pins, resilient means normally holding the cone follower in a raised position, a sleeve slidably mounted on the shank having a cam face on its lower end, a radially extending pin on the cone follower normally engaging the cam track, means for connecting and disconnecting the sleeve with the shank, and means for normally holding the sleeve against rotation when the sleeve is disconnected from the shank.
3. In a device for honing the walls of cylinders, a shank provided with an axial bore and a tool head provided with radial slots, and an annular circumferentially extending slot bisecting the first slots, hone carriers slidably mounted in the radial slots provided with guide pins mounted in the circumferentially extending slot, contractile coil springs engaging the opposite ends of the hone carriers for normally urging the same to a contracted position, thrust pins slidably carried by the shank and extending into the bore thereof and engaging the inner faces of the hone carriers, a follower cone slidable in said bore, spring means normally holding the cone follower in a raised position, a radially extending pin carried by the cone follower and extending exteriorly of the shank, a sleeve slidable and rotatable on said shank having a cam surface on its lower end normally en gaging the pin, means for initially adjusting the sleeve on the shank, a clutch disk operatively connected with the shank, means for raising and lowering the disk for establishing driving connection between the sleeve and shank, a brake drum slidably associated with the sleeve and arranged for rotary movement therewith, and a brake hand for engaging said drum for holding the sleeve against rotation when the clutch disk is disconnected therefrom.
