Abstract

Hermetically-sealed components for radio or electrical apparatus are made by applying an adhesive film of polyisobutylene to the component and then a solution of polythene in a solvent having a boiling point higher than the melting point of polythene, and evaporating the solvent. The solution may be applied by dipping, spraying, painting, moulding or other known method and the component may be preheated to a temperature higher than the boiling point of the solvent before applying the solution which may also contain fillers. The polyisobutylene is preferably applied as a solution in a similar solvent, e.g. xylene. The Provisional Specification discloses a process in which the polythene solution is applied without the initial polyisobutylene coating and lists polyisobutylene, rubber-like materials, gums, waxes, natural and synthetic resins, plastics, mica, silica, clays, and ceramic materials and silicones as suitable additives for the polythene solution.
