Abstract

Natural rubber, synthetic rubbers such as butadiene - styrene copolymers, isomerised derivatives thereof and other rubber-like materials such as gutta-percha and balata are bonded to metal, glass and the like by forming a coating of selenium dioxide or selenious acid in a solution of the rubber on the surface of the metal, glass or the like, placing a layer of vulcanisable rubber on the thus coated surface and vulcanising the assembly in a known manner; alternatively a solution of selenium dioxide in an organic solvent, which may be butyl alcohol is applied to the surface of the metal, glass or the like, a solution of the rubber to be bonded is applied thereon, and on the thus treated surface a layer of vulcanisable rubber is placed, and the assembly vulcanised in a known manner. In the alternative method the solution of selenium dioxide may be dried rapidly before the application of the rubber solution. Specification 604,965 is referred to.
