Abstract

830,722. Nuts &c. MORSE, M. April 22, 1958 [April 26, 1957], No. 12662/58. Class 89(1) A nut assembly comprises a metal nut body 11, Fig. 4, and a sealing boot 12 of silicone rubber secured to the body by engagement with at least one annular groove 51, 74 in body 11, having a maximum width of from 0.015 to 0.040 inches and a depth of from 0.010 to 0.030 inches. The boot is applied by injection moulding and is subsequently cured for about one half minute at between 200‹ and 260‹F., thereby liberating benzoic-acid which, it is said, is trapped in the or each groove, due to the dimensions thereof, and causes partial de-polymerization of the silicone rubber, creating an adhesive which bonds the rubber and metal together in the groove. The boot may be formed with lips 80, 82 to form a lubricant reservoir 84 for a shaft 79 rotating in the assembly. In a modification, the nut member 106, Fig. 11, has annular grooves 138, 156, and the boot is formed as a cap 162, e.g. to cover the actuating lever of a toggle switch.
