Abstract

An unvulcanised rubber film is applied to a substrate surface by causing relative frictional movement between the rubber and substrate to at least soften the contact surface of the rubber; and then moving the rubber and/or substrate in relation to each other whilst continuing the frictional movement to leave a trail of the rubber on the substrate. The rubber can be applied, e.g., as decoration, labelling or a potential high bond strength adhesive, or to confer desired properties on the substrate surface, e.g. compatibility with other materials or improvement in ozone or general ageing resistance. The method is useful in the mfr. of footwear, harnessing, furniture, handbags, flexible or rigid containers and boats.
