Abstract
646,448. Pipe couplings. CARTER, J. C. Oct. 25, 1947, No. 28584. Convention date, Oct. 25, 1946. [Class 99(i)] [Also in Group XXIX] A fuelling nozzle and valve particularly for the underwing fuelling of aircraft comprises an inner tube 10 slidable in an outer tube 15 and having a closed end 11, a member 16 rotatable on the outer tube and adapted to engage a member 17 on the aircraft tank 18 to form a coupling, an actuating handle 30 mounted on the outer tube for forcing the inner tube out of the outer tube to open ports 12, and an interlocking pin 35 adapted to prevent actuation of the handle when the coupling is disengaged, and uncoupling when the ports 12 are open. The handle carries a ball-race 31 which runs in grooves 32 in the wall of the inner tube which, when forced out of the outer tube, lifts a spring- loaded valve 19 normally sealing the tank 18: The member 16 and the member 17 are connected by a bayonet-joint and, when engaged, a hole 38 in the member 16 is exposed to receive the pin 35 moved by a cam 37 on the handle when the handle is actuated. In a modification, the valve 19 is backed by a cup-shaped washer forming a second closure, and the coupling is effected by dogs 67, mounted on rods 76 having at their lower ends a one-tooth gear 77 meshing with a rack internally of a collar 78 the rotation of which causes the dogs to 'engage a ring 80.
