Abstract
646,364. Phase changers. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Jan. 24, 1946, No. 2424. Convention date, July 29, 1944. [Class 38 (ii)] A combination of several phase shifters, each having its primary winding supplied with quadrature phase currents at a frequency different from that supplied to the others, has means for simultaneously adjusting the relative angular position of the rotor and stator windings of each phase shifter by an amount having a predetermined relation to its frequency. These amounts may be proportional to the frequency. The arrangements described provide for adjustment at angular rates in proportion to the frequencies. In Fig. 5 the hand wheel 15 drives the phase shifters 25, 27 and 37 through successive stages of gear reduction, the first rotor turning at an angular rate which is ten times that of the second and a hundred times that of the third. These rates are proportional to the frequencies (e.g. 93, 9.3 and 0.93 kc. per second) respectively applied to devices 25, 27 and 37. The movements are indicated by counter 51. The rotor of device 37 can be independently turned by knob 43 which is first pulled forward to disengage detent 45 from hole 49 in driving gear 41. Each stator has two windings S1 and S2, at right angles as shown in Fig. 1, and supplied with currents in quadrature ; they are mounted in slots on a cylindrical insulated support carried by a hollow shaft which can be clamped in any angular position in a split bearing. The rotor windings, made up of coils R1, R2, R3, R4 of large and short span, as shown, connected in series-aiding, are in grooves in a cylindrical insulating support enveloping the stator and carried by driving shaft 9 ; the connections are through brushes 11 and slip-rings 5 and 7 on shaft 9. For the higher frequencies there is an electrostatic shield between stator and rotor. Fig. 4 shows a bridge connection of two phase shifters having stator windings S1-S2 and S3-S4 respectively and rotor windings R and RR.
