Abstract

235,933. Marks, E. C. R., (Schneider et Cie.). March 21, 1924. Order apparatus.-Relates to arrangements, applicable e.g. to the apparatus described in Specifications 177,147 and 200,798, [both in Class 92 (ii), Ordnance &c.], for controlling guns on warships, in which the setting of a transmitting device in a definite angular position about a centre of rotation is repeated electrically at a distance, the transmitter being a closed circular potentiometer supplying n potential differences, and the receivers being synchronous motors of n phases. The angular movements of the receivers are made to correspond more closely with those at the transmitter by short-circuiting or making substantially without resistance two arcs of the potentiometer, each of about 45‹, at the points of supply of the current. In the transmitter shown in Fig. 1 the rheostats 1, 2 and connecting arcs 3, 4 substantially without resistance, are arranged in a circle on a support rotatable about the centre of the circle. The direct current supply is connected at the points a, b, and fixed brushes 15, 16, 17 arranged 120‹ apart are connected respectively to brushes 26, 27, 28 at the receiver, these brushes bearing on rings to which are connected the three armature windings 23, 24, 25 respectively. These windings are smooth and uniformly distributed and provided with a fixed magnetic core. Other brushes 18, 19, 20 similarly arranged at the transmitter may be connected to a second receiver. In the transmitter shown in Fig. 2 the commutator of a direct-current motor is utilized, the current being supplied through pairs of fixed brushes 31, 32 each short-circuiting an arc of about 45‹. Increased sensitiveness of the receivers may be obtained by (1) supplying an alternating current to the potentiometer at the transmitter at points 9, 10, Fig. 1, or 33, 34, Fig. 2, midway between the points of supply of the direct current, (2) imparting a vibratory motion to the crank driving the transmitter, (3) producing an additional intermittent short circuiting at the points of supply of direct-current to the transmitter, (4) generating a rotary field in the transmitter, or (5) interposing polyphase transformers in the line connections to the receivers.
