Abstract

Coating compositions comprise a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate, which may be partially hydrolysed, a hard brittle resin and a wax, preferably dissolved in a volatile solvent, e.g. toluene or a mixture of toluene and denatured alcohol. An anti-oxidant may be added. Specified resins are coumarone-indene, maleic anhydride modified rosin, phenol-formaldehyde modified rosin, pentaerythritol esters of rosin, pentaerythritol esters of maleic anhydride modified rosin, ester gum, hydrogenated ester gum, polymerized rosin and natural dammar. Waxes specified are paraffin, spermacetti, ceresin and amorphous or microcrystalline. The ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer may be made as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,200,429. A copolymer in which the molar ratio of ethylene to vinyl acetate is 3 : 1 is made by charging a stainless steel tube with 125 parts of vinyl acetate and benzoyl peroxide, filling the tube with ethylene to 500 atmospheres pressure and heating at 70 DEG C. Water is preferably included with the vinyl acetate. The ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer may be partially hydrolysed by dissolving in benzene and isopropyl alcohol, adding a solution of potassium or sodium hydroxide in isopropyl alcohol, heating and stirring, removing the organic solvents by steam distillation and washing and drying on a rubber mill. The heat-sealable coating compositions may be applied to sheet materials and used in packaging.
