Abstract
A film of a carboxylic acid ester or ether of cellulose is provided with a water-resistant, heat-sealing coating comprising polystyrene, a wax, a natural resin or resin substitute, and, as plasticiser, a liquid polymer of styrene or of a lower alkyl derivative thereof. Suitable waxes are paraffin wax, a high-melting microcrystalline hydrocarbon wax known as "Santowax," beeswax, candelilla wax, montan wax, ozokerite and chlorinated naphthalenes. The specified resin is gum dammar and resin substitutes include ester gums, hydrogenated methyl abietate and formaldehyde-toluene-sulphonamide resins. The coating is conveniently formed from a solution in toluene, benzene or xylene, which may, but preferably does not, contain from 5-20 per cent by weight of solvent for the cellulose ester film, e.g. acetone, ethylene dichloride or ethyl alcohol. The liquid polymer of alpha-methyl-para-methyl styrene may be prepared using stannic chloride as catalyst. The coated films are stated to be useful as wrappers and as electrical insulators.
