Abstract
A coating composition comprises a wax or wax-like material (18 to 25 per cent), a solvent plasticizer for the resin and wax (18 to 30 per cent) and a coumarone resin, the weight of the plasticizer being not less than the weight of wax and the weight of wax being not more than 50 per cent of the weight of resin. The wax may be paraffin wax, micro-crystalline (amorphous) paraffin wax having a melting-point above 50 DEG C., carnauba, ceresin, Japan or beeswax, chlorinated naphthalene or synthetic waxes such as "Flexo Wax." Suitable plasticizers are dibutyl phthalate, methyl abietate, tricresyl phosphate, dimethyl cyclohexanol oxalate, methyl-cyclohexanol phthalate and "Texyn." The resin is preferably a non heat-convertible coumarone or coumarone-indene resin (melting between 50 DEG and 160 DEG C.). The composition may be applied dissolved in a solvent such as benzene or xylene to one or both sides of paper or cardboard by dipping, brushing or spraying or as a hot melt by a roll or knife coating machine, preferably followed by smoothing and chilling steps. The examples describe the production of transparent moisture-proof coatings on paper made from waste, straw paper, imitation Kraft paper, cartridge board and glassine paper.
