Abstract

645,527. Electromagnetic switches. BRAY, Ltd., E. N., and HOPWOOD, E. E. Nov. 29, 1948, No. 30947. [Class 38(v)] A contactor is given a delayed make or break by means of a pinion k (or rack) carried by the armature and engaging a fixed rack k<SP>1</SP> (or pinion), the pinion k operating a coaxial lever n between the end of which and a part fixed relative to the rack is mounted an extendable and contractable mechanical escapement delay device s. This is of the kind in which an actuating bar t is retarded in one direction of movement but moves freely in the other. The contactor shown has a quick break and delayed make. On de-energization of the magnet j a spring h, assisted by gravity, rotates the armature a about its pivot b separating a contact e from the fixed contact e<SP>1</SP> and causing the rotation of the pinion k as it moves along the fixed rack k<SP>1</SP>. The lever n has a pin p engaging a slot q in the pinion to provide a lost-motion connection and is urged downwards by a coiled spring r so that as the pinion rotates, the lever n moves with it, the actuating bar t of the time-delay mechanism moving freely downwards till a pin y encounters an adjustable cam x. The bar t and lever n now remain stationary while the pinion rotates and takes up more or less of the lost motion between it and the lever. On energizing the magnet, the pinion rolls back along the rack, retaking up the lost motion, after which the lever n is carried along with it slowly under the retarding influence of the time delay mechanism. This continues till the contacts are nearly closed when the delay mechanism becomes disengaged and allows the contacts to close quickly. The time delay is adjustable by the cam x. In a modification, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), affording a quick make and delayed break, the lever n is coupled to the pinion without any lost motion and the effective length of the actuating bar is adjustable by a cam device.
