Abstract

401,390. Electromagnetic interrupters. RAMSDEN, L. A., 80, St. Ives Road, Platt Lane, Rusholme, Manchester. June 2, 1932, No. 15584. [Class 38 (v).] An electromagnetic interrupter has a spring- operated contact member arranged to energise alternately two operating electromagnets or solenoids, to operate a contact lever or switch arm the speed of movement of the contact lever or switch arm being controlled by an escapement mechanism, adjustable fixed contacts being provided to vary the duration of travel of the contact lever. As shown in Fig. 1 the solenoids B, B are energised alternately by the movements of a spring-operated contact-member a<3> which oscillates between relatively fixed contacts a<4>, a<4>. The movement of the contact member is effected through a reciprocating core b having a pin b<1> engaging a slot d in a pivoted arm D which bears a pin d<1> engaging a slot a in a lever A pivoted at a<1>. The outer end of the lever A is connected by a dead-centre spring a<2> to a pin and lever A<1> also pivoted at a<1> and carrying at its free end the movable contact a<3>. The lever A<1> is connected by a link c and gearing c<1> ... c<7> to an escapement c<8>. On energisation of an electromagnet B the core b is attracted and the consequent swinging over of lever D brings the spring a<2> across the dead-centre position. The contact a<3> is moved slowly across towards the other fixed contact under the control of the escapement, its engagement therewith serving to complete the circuit of the other electromagnet B and thus to initiate a succeeding operating cycle. The oscillation of the lever D may be utilised to operate controlled circuits by means of pins d<4> (Fig. 7), which engage and step round a star wheel D<1> driving around cams F, F<1> (Fig. 8), these cams being arranged to operate rollers g carried by pivoted cams g<1> to which are attached spring contact blades G co-operating with fixed contacts 6. A spring detent e engaging the pin d<2> holds the lever D in its displaced positions. The fixed contacts a<4> are carried on an insulated plate A<3> adapted to be adjusted by a screw a<5> to vary the frequency of operation of the interrupter by increasing or decreasing the distance of travel of the movable contact a<3> under the control of the escapement retarding device.
