Abstract
645,466. Blasting-cartridges and charges. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I. June 18, 1948, No. 16446. Convention date, July 2, 1947. [Class 9 (i)] An explosive charge with at least one cavity, the cavity being lined with rigid material, comprises at least 95 per cent of a nitrated organic compound having a melting point above 100‹ C and a density above 1.4 grams per c.c. The hollow charge is formed by placing loosely in a rigid container 4, explosive material 1 and pressing into the mass of explosive a conical metal liner 3 to form a cavity 2 in the explosive while compressing the charge. A metal lined passageway 6 within the explosive houses a blasting cap or detonating fuze. In the example, the explosive composition is 97.5 per cent cyclonite and 2.5 per cent high melting point paraffin wax product (proportions being by weight), the explosive being compressed to a density of 1.6. The cyclonite may be replaced by other nitrated organic compounds with a melting point above 100‹ C, e.g. pentaerythritol tetranitrate, tetryl, ethylene-dinitramine, the proportion of organic compound being at least 95 per cent with 0.5 to 5.0 per cent of high melting point wax as binder. The detonating fuze may be Primacord. The liner may be of steel, copper or glass and hemispherical, semi-ovoid or pyramidal in shape. The container is of rigid combustible material. Densities of 1.501 to 1.652 were obtained when pressures of 11,000 to 22,800 lb. per sq. in. were applied to cones of diameters 1¢ to 1# inches.
