Abstract
912,558. Electric blasting detonators and delay compositions therefor. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I. Aug. 19, 1960 [Oct. 7, 1959], No. 28805/60. Classes 9 (1) and 9 (2). A deflagrating composition, especially suitable for use as a delay composition in electric delay detonators, comprises boron, red lead and not more than 75%, based on the weight of the composition, of dibasic lead phosphite. Preferred proportions are 74.5 to 22% of red lead, 0.5 to 3.0% of boron, 25 to 75% of dibasic lead phosphite and in a typical example (No. 1) these are 53.13 : 45.50 : 1.37 respectively. A graining agent such as " Neoprene " or " Thiokol " (Registered Trade Mark) LP-2 in an amount of 0.5 to 1.5% may be added. The detonator may consist of an aluminium shell 1 containing a base charge 2 of a mixture of pentaerythritol tetranitrate and graphite; and a primer charge 3 of lead azide. The delay composition of the invention 4 is present in a swaged lead tube carrier 5 and an aluminium capsule 6 with a perforation 7 is placed above. Polyethylene cup 8 contains a loose ignition charge, and the upper end of the shell is sealed by a rubber plug 10 through which pass insulated lead wires 11 which extend beyond the lower portion of the plug and are joined by a high resistance bridge wire.
