Abstract

645,437. Casting-machines ; cores ; moulds. WETHERILL ENGINEERING CO. Feb. 24, 1948, No. 5453. Convention date, April 16, 1942. [Class 83 (i)] A mould for molten metal has a part pervious to gas and is arranged in a chamber which can be evacuated to extract gas from the mould through said pervious part. A metal mould 36 with a metal end ring 40 supporting a sand or other porous core 42 may be arranged on a plate 2 in alignment with a downwardly projecting gate 32 of porous material supported by a perforated member 18 and surrounded by an outer casing 12 evacuated by passages 28 connecting the space 24 with an evacuated bell 6. This has a conical seat 4 to engage the conical edge of the plate 2, this seat having grooves 10, Fig. 1A, to reduce leakage. Bellows 46 with their inside open to the atmosphere engage the top of the core and when the bell is evacuated apply pressure to hold the parts to the plate 2. In a modification a porous mould replaces the mould 36 and core 42. In another modification three moulds 76, Fig. 4, are arranged on the plate 62, each having its cavity c connected to the gate 32 by a passage 100 and porous cores 80, 78, the latter being evacuated by annular grooves 82 in the face of the plate 62. Bellows 68 engage bridge members 72 resting on the moulds.
