Abstract

783,312. Making plaster &c. moulds. GRINNELL CORPORATION. May 9, 1955 [Sept. 15, 1954], No. 13317/55. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXIX] The compressor or actuator 41 of a diaphragm valve is shaped to conform to those portions of the diaphragm 38 between its clamped periphery and the transverse clamped portion adjacent the weir 22 when freely distorted in the closed position but not under line pressure so that the diaphragm has complete backing support under line pressure. The compressor is shaped by a moulding process. The ends of a conventional compressor are cut off and part of the valve bonnet 32 is cut away at 72. With the diaphragm 38 closed on the weir 22, but not under pressure, a plaster-like mixture e.g. of Plaster of Paris, or a material known under the Trade Name Tamastone is run into the valve bonnet 32 as at 74, Fig. 9, to form a male casting 78, Fig. 10. The bonnet is then removed and inverted and the male casting 78 is surrounded by a sheet 76 of metal or other material to enable a female casting 80 to be made as shown in Fig. 10. The casting 80 is then conveniently sectioned to enable a mould for the compressor to be made by known methods. The contour of the compressor may alternatively be taken directly from the mould 78 if desired. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 732,201 [Group XXIX].
