Abstract

Stilbene derivatives for use in whitening textiles are manufactured by reacting two molecular proportions of cyanuric chloride with, in any order, one molecular proportion of 4 : 41-diaminostilbene-2 : 21-disulphonic acid or a salt thereof, two of dimethylamine or morpholine and two of a primary or secondary aliphatic amine free from hydroxy groups or of a primary aromatic amine which is either free from substituents or carries in the nucleus one or more alkyl radicals and/or one radical selected from methoxy and sulphonamido. In examples, a suspension of 1 mol. of the disodium salt of 4 : 41 - bis - (211 : 411 - dichloro - 111 : 311 : 511 - triazyl - 611) - diaminostilbene - 2 : 21 - disulphonic acid, prepared by condensing 1 mol. of 4 : 41-diaminostilbene - 2 : 21 - disulphonic acid with 2 mols. of cyanuric chloride in aqueous acetone in the presence of caustic soda, is heated with 2 mols. of aniline or m-toluidine with the addition of caustic soda and the product is heated with 4 mols. of dimethylamine or morpholine. An additional aromatic amine specified is p-xylidine. Specifications 495,479 and 616,523 are referred to. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of compounds prepared by: (A) heating 1 mol. of the disodium salt of 4 : 41-bis-(211 : 411-dichloro - 111 : 311 : 511 - triazyl - 611) - diaminostilbene-2 : 21-disulphonic acid with 2 mols. of dimethylamine and the product with 2 mols. of the hydrochloride of p-aminobenzenesulphonamide, both steps with addition of caustic soda; (B) replacing the last reactant in (A) by p-anisidine hydrochloride; (c) heating the starting material of (1) with 4 mols. of dimethylamine; (D) heating, in aqueous acetone with the addition of caustic soda, 2 mols. of cyanuric chloride with 2 mols. of morpholine, the product with 1 mol. of 4 : 41-diaminostilbene-2 : 21-disulphonic acid and the product of this latter condensation with 2 mols. of p-anisidine.ALSO:As whitening agents for textile materials may be employed the condensation products of two molecular proportions of cyanuric chloride with one of 4 : 41-diaminostilbene-2 : 21-disulphonic acid or a salt thereof, two of dimethylamine or morpholine and two of a primary or secondary aliphatic amine free from hydroxy groups or of a primary aromatic amine which is either free from substituents or carries in the nucleus one or more alkyl radicals and/or one radical selected from methoxy and sulphonamido.
