Abstract
645,145. Sawtooth generating circuits. HARDIE, A. M., and METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 27, 1947, No. 31425. [Class 40 (vi)] In a sawtooth generator the rise or fall of voltage or current is periodically arrested during each sweep period so that the sawtooth wave has a stepped sweep portion. Fig. 1 shows a sawtooth generator in which the suppressor grid of valve V1 is normally biassed so that the valve only conducts when a positive going pulse is applied to terminal 2. When valve V1 is rendered conducting capacitor C1 charges linearly through the valve until a negative-going pulse is applied at terminal 1 when valve V1 is cut-off and the voltage at point A remains constant. When the pulse terminates, capacitor C1 again continues to charge and the process is repeated until at a point depending on the setting of potentiometer P1 the gas-filled valve V2 conducts and discharges capacitor C1 and the cycle is repeated. The voltage at point A thus follows a sawtooth waveform with a stepped edge as shown in Fig. 2b. If the pulse applied to terminal 2 is of equal duration and in phase with the sawtooth waveform, the truncated sawtooth waveform shown in Fig. 2d is generated. The diodes V3 and V4 act as D.C. restorers and resistor R4 may be adjusted to linearise the sweep.
