Abstract

Solutions of nylon are obtained by dissolving the nylon in an organic compound having 5 atoms linked together to form a single ring structure, the components linked together to form the said ring being selected from the group consisting of <FORM:0645033/IV (a)/1> R being hydrogen or a hydrocarbon containing one or two carbon atoms, and being further selected so that such components include one -O- and two -CO- or, alternatively, two -O- and one -CO- groups. Preferably the components -O- and -CO- together form the grouping -O-CO-O or -CO-O CO-. Organic compounds specified are maleic anhydride, succinic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, ethylene carbonate, a -methyl-ethylene carbonate and a : a 1-dimethyl-ethylene carbonate. The solutions are formed by heating together the organic compound and the nylon. On cooling separation of the nylon may occur. In examples a nylon polyhexamethylene adipamide is dissolved by heating in (1) and (2) ethylene carbonate at 200-210 DEG C.; (3) succinic anhydride; (4) maleic anhydride; (5) a -methyl-ethylene carbonate at 220 DEG C.; (6) a ,a 1-dimethyl-ethylene carbonate at 170-180 DEG C.; (7) phthalic anhydride at 220 DEG C. Separation of the nylon occurs on cooling to 160 DEG to 200 DEG C.
