Novel piperazinones of the formula (and salts and addition compounds thereof) wherein n is 2, 3 or 4, R is H, alkyl or carbalkoxy and carbon atoms 2 and 3 may be shared by an aromatic ring, are prepared by condensing a 1,2-diamine, such as ethylene diamine or ophenylene diamine, with a compound of formula R.CHX.(CH 2 ) n .CHY.COOR<SP>1</SP>, wherein n and R are as defined above and X and Y represent chlorine and bromine and R<SP>1</SP> is H, Me or Et.
