Abstract
Solutions of highly polymeric linear polyesters (including interpolyesters) of the kind formed by condensation of aromatic dicarboxylic acids, e.g. terephthalic acid, and glycols are obtained by dissolving the polyester in an organic compound having 4 ot 5 atoms linked together to form a single ring structure, the components linked together in the said ring structure being selected from <FORM:0645032/IV (a)/1> and -CH=CH- and being further selected so that the components present in the ring structure include at least one -O- and at least one <FORM:0645032/IV (a)/2> which preferably form the group <FORM:0645032/IV (a)/3> Clear solutions result at elevated temperature, and these separate into two layers on cooling, e.g. to 160-130 DEG C. The solutions p are used to form film or filaments, and with smaller proportions of solvent, shaped masses. Solvents specified are b -propiolactone, g -butyrolactone, succinic anhydride, maleic anhydride, ethylene carbonate, and their isomers. In examples highly polymeric ethylene terephthalate is dissolved by heating in (1) b -propiolactone at 150 DEG C.; (2) maleic anhydride at 180 DEG C.; (3) succinic anhydride at 180-190 DEG C. and (5) ethylene carbonate at 180-190 DEG C. Polyesters are also mentioned prepared from acids of the general formula <FORM:0645032/IV (a)/4> <FORM:0645032/IV (a)/5> ; <FORM:0645032/IV (a)/6> ; <FORM:0645032/IV (a)/7> or from 1 : 5, 2 : 6, or 2 : 7-naphthalen dicarboxylic acids, or the alkyl, cyclo-alkyl or aryl esters, acid halides, or ammonium or amine salts of such acids, and from ethylene glycol, tri-, tetra-, penta-, or hexa-methylene glycol or their esters.
