Uncut pile is produced by heating a fabric having, as warp or weft, both thermoplastic yarns (which shrink on heating) and unshrinkable yarns, the latter being woven single or double satin or sateen so as to form pile loops on one or both surfaces. Thermoplastic and unshrinkable wefts may be inserted alternately or may be doubled together. The shrinkable yarn is preferably " Vinyon " (R.T.M.) and the other may be wool, cotton, viscose, cuprammonium, or cellulose acetate. The fabric may be raised and may be patterned by destroying some of the pile, in which case two colour effects can be obtained by crossdyeing the pile and the ground. Fabrics woven folded. When the shrinkage is widthwise, the fabric is woven folded in two or three layers to give a useful width after shrinking. Mixed yarns specified in the examples include: 50s worsted with a 30 den. 10 filament nylon core; half nylon/half viscose staple doubled with Vinyori; half nylon waste/half viscose staple with a Vinyon core; wool and Vinyon doubled 24s t.p.i. and then folded with soluble alginate 142 t.p.i.; two, three, or five 50 den. viscose yarns doubled 10s t.p.i. with a 40 den. Vinyon yarn; two each of 50 den. viscose, 50 den. cellulose acetate, and 40 den. Vinyon doubled 10s t.p.i.; a 40 den. Vinyon yarn, a 15 count viscose staple yarn, and a 20 count viscose yarn containing cyanamideformaldehyde resin according to Specification 506,793 doubled 10s t.p.i.; viscose coated with a film of cellulose acetate.
