Abstract
643,953. Air-break switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. July 14, 1948, No. 18918. Convention date, Aug. 21, 1947. [Class 38(v)] A double-throw, high-voltage air-break, disconnect switch comprises. a movable contact arm 40 engageable with either of two spaced fixed contacts 14, 20. The operating mechanism is similar to-that of Specification 563,924 and comprises a rotatable insulator 30 carrying a crank 34, 72, having a roller 74 co-operating with cam slots 78, 80 in a housing 42 pivoted at 66 on a fixed bracket 24 in which the insulator 30 is pivoted. The contact arm 40 is pivotable about its longitudinal axis in bearings 54 and 44 in the housing, and has a forked extension 50 engaging opposite sides of the crank 72. With the contacts 20, 40 in engagement, Fig. 1, counter-clockwise rotation of insulator 30 first causes the contact 40 to rotate about its longitudinal axis until it is released from spring contact 20. Further rotation of the insulator causes the roller 74 to enter the inclined part of slot 78 and pivot the housing and arm 40 clockwise, Fig. 2, about the axis 66, until the roller reaches the junction of slots 78, 80, when the arm 40 is substantially vertical. Continued rotation of the insulator, causes the roller 74 to enter slot 80 and the housing is tilted over to the right, Fig. 2, into a horizontal position where the contact arm 40 is rotated about its longitudinal axis into engagement with contact 14. The initial and final rotary movements of the contact 40 without pivotal movement of the housing are caused by the crank 72 engaging the forks 50 whilst the roller 74 is in horizontal portions of the slots 78, 80. The housing also carries a projection 82 which enters a notch 84 on the crank 34 when the arm 40 is vertical, so that continued rotation of the crank positively forces the arm 40 overcentre by means of the parts 82, 84, in case the roller 74 becomes jammed at the junction of slots 78, 80.
