Abstract

529,136. Air-break switches ; contact-members for switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. May 23, 1939, No. 15271. Convention date, May 31, 1938. [Class 38 (v)] A contact-arm 31, when closed, bridges contacts 19, 21, the latter having an extension 25 between the limbs of which is pivoted at 41 a yoke-shaped switch-member 29. A pin 47 interconnecting the limbs 33 of member 29 takes in a slot 65 in the contact-arm 31, and serves also as pivot for the yoke-shaped end 45 of an insulating rod 43, which is connected to a crank 49 on a squared part of a shaft 51 on which is also mounted an arm 57 connected to operating mechanism (not shown). The contact-pressure is imparted by a spring system 69 comprising concentric springs compressed between the arm 31 and member 29. When the mechanism is tripped and the opening spring (not shown) moves rod 43 to the right, pin 47 first moves to the end of slot 65 and then rotates arm 31 so that the upper contact 59 thereon rolls on contact 19 and causes engagement between arcing-tips 23, 63. During this movement, the lower contact 61 on the arm 31 disengages contact 21, the circuit being still made, however, by a flexible conductor 83. When the arm 31 engages the stop 81 in member 29, the two rotate together about pivot 41 and separate the arcing-tips. Since connection 83 is only operative during the opening and closing movements, it need only be of small section.
