643,461. Bottling. CHELLE, P. L. Feb. 11, 1947, No. 4002. Convention date, Aug. 14, 1943. [Class 125(ii)] An automatic rotary filling machine for bottling liquids by vacuum, comprising a central collector or subdivided into compartments connected on the one hand to delivery spouts and on the other hand to a vacuum pump, is characterized in that the collector comprises a distributing member putting each of the compartments in turn in communication with the vacuum pump throughout the period during which the corresponding bottle is being filled, and, when the filling is completed, putting each compartment on the one hand in communication with the outer atmosphere and, on the other hand, with a direct return conduit leading to the liquid supply tank of the machine, so as to deliver thereto any small amount of liquid which may have been sucked into the said compartment of the collector at the end of the filling process. As shown, when a delivery spout is lowered on to a bottle 48, engagement of the bottle neck with a conical head 29 compresses spring 36 to close a venting valve 37, whereafter tube 30 slides up tube 6 against the action of spring 41 to uncover vacuum aperture 45 and liquid aperture 46. Aperture 45 communicates via tube 7 and pipe 9 with one compartment of a collector 8 which rotates with the machine and co-operates with a stationary distributor plug 11. During filling the collector compartment is connected via passages 23, 18 and 16 to a vacuum pump. Upon completion of filling, the spout is raised, apertures 45 and 46 are closed by tube 30, and valve 37 opens to vent the bottle to atmosphere via channel 47 and aperture 46, after which the conical head 29 is withdrawn from the bottle. As aperture 46 is closed, the collector compartment is vented to atmosphere via channel 22 and also connected through channel 24 to outflow pipe 28 which returns to liquid supply tank 1 any liquid trapped in the compartment of the collector 8.
