[Class 74 (ii)] In a straight-bar machine, sleeves 5, bearing thread-guides 6, slide on parallel bars 3 and are connected by flexible blades 7 with driving- sleeves 4 slidable on bars 2 and driven by a part 10 reciprocated with a constant stroke on guide-bars 11 by a rack-and-pinion 12, 13. The travel of the sleeves (and therefore of the thread-guides) is selectively adjusted by selvedge stops 23, 24, or cardigan stops 25, 26, containing rods 29, 29a respectively, which can be projected, as desired, to engage abutments 30, 30a, on the sleeves 4; the rods 29, 29a are projected, for this purpose, against the action of springs r, by bars 31, 31a, lowered according to pattern requirements by rockers 32 operated by a pair of synchronized rotating members 34. The drive is transmitted from the driving part 10 to the sleeves 4 by slidable abutments 15, 15a and co-acting abutments 16, 16a. When a carrier is arrested by the action of a stop, the co-acting oblique faces of the pair of abutments transmitting the drive ride over each other and the slidable abutment is pushed back into the driving part 10. At the beginning of each stroke, those slidable abutments which are retracted, but are to transmit the drive on that stroke, are projected by cocking hammers 19, actuated by interconnected members 21, one at each end of the machine.
