2 : 5-Diacyloxy-2 : 5-dihydrofuranes, of the general formula <FORM:0642277/IV (b)/1> (wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 represent hydrogen or aliphatic, aromatic, araliphatic, heterocyclic or alicyclic radicals, and Ac represents an acyl radical) are manufactured by treating furane or a furane derivative with halogen, an organic acid and an agent capable of binding hydrohalic acids (preferably a salt of the organic acid). Carbonyl groups in the a -position (e.g. as in furfural or a -acetylfurane) may require to be protected (e.g. by acetalization or esterification) to enable the reaction to proceed in these cases. In examples: (1) furane is treated with bromine, acetic acid and anhydrous potassium acetate to produce 2 : 5-diacetoxy-2 : 5-dihydrofurane; (2) furfural diacetate similarly yields 2 : 5-diacetoxy-2 : 5-dihydrofurfural diacetate.
