Abstract
642,223. Indicating liquid-levels. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DE RAFFINAGE. June 18, 1948, No. 16497. Convention date, June 23, 1947. [Class 123(i)] A method of gauging the water level in the bottom of a tank T containing a liquid less dense than water comprises withdrawing liquid from the bottom of the tank by means of a movable member, e.g. a tube 3, which is raised until water ceases to be discharged from the tube 3 and is replaced by the liquid, the position of the tube 3 being then noted. The tube 3 which is enclosed in a cylinder 1 provided with a stuffing box 4, is raised by rotating a nut 13 mounted in a bracket 15 and engaging the threaded part 12 of the tube 3. Upon opening a cock 7 on the tube 3 water is siphoned out of the tank T, and the tube 3 is then adjusted as described above, its final position being indicated by a pointer 5 cooperating with a scale 6. In one modification the cock 7 is replaced by a port in the tube 3, the port lying below the stuffing box 4 and hence being closed when the tube 3 is in the lowest position. Alternatively the cylinder 1 may be closed when the tube 3 is in its highest position, either by a valve formed on the end of the tube 3, or by a separate valve.
