Abstract

In the production of sheets, pipes or other articles of cork by the compression of small pieces of cork with simultaneous heating thereof, the pieces are compressed between pressure plates or mould members that are heated by electric induction from eddy currents therein. Thus, mould members put together in mating pairs may be piled on top of each other to form a column which is placed in a solenoid or transformer to form the core thereof, the solenoid &c. being fed with A.C. at e.g. 500 to 1000 cycles per second. By changing the frequency or by phase mutation between current and voltage, the heating effect may be varied. Temperatures of 100-200 DEG C. may be used. By only partly filling the mould and heating to 200-250 DEG C., porous products may be obtained, the expanded cork filling the mould. Tubular or tube-segment-shaped articles may be made by using a mandrel in a cylindrical mould, both the mandrel and the mould being heated by electric induction. Such tubular articles may be sliced into discs to form rings for use in crown cork caps.
