Abstract

642,025. Electrolytic concentration of suspensions. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I. June 30, 1948, No. 17602. Convention date, Oct. 31, 1947. [Class 41] A cell 1 with rubber or similarly lined walls is provided with spaced electrodes 2 connected to a source of direct current, a plurality of spaced diaphragms 5 impervious to colloids, means to feed dilute aqueous suspension to the cell, means to collect concentrated suspension from the cell, and means to recycle a portion of moderately-concentrated suspension to the cell for further concentration. As shown, the dilute suspension is contained in a reservoir 6, from which it is fed to the cell by a pipe 7 and a manifold 10. The diaphragms 5 are spaced from the sides, top and bottom of the cell, except for the two rod diaphragms 5A, which extend to the sides and bottom. The diaphragms may be formed from a single sheet of material interlaced around vertical supports. When current is passed through the suspension, the colloid particles on their way to the anode are stopped by the diaphragms and fall to the bottom of the cell. The current is reversed periodically and prevents the colloids from coagulating on the diaphragms. The concentrate is led by a pipe 14 to a reservoir 11 from which a pipe 13 leads back to an injector 12 in the pipe 7 conveying suspension to the cell 1. Clear liquid is drawn from the cell through pipes 15 and foam caused by gases formed is withdrawn through suction pipes 16. The suspension may be polytetrafluoroethylene stabilized with-the sodium salt of the sulphuric acid ester of a mixture of long-chain alcohols, predominantly lauryl alcohol. Specification 492,030 is referred to.
