Abstract

[Class 7 (v] [Also in Group XXXIV] A single air compressor b, charging a high pressure reservoir g used for starting the engine d and a low pressure reservoir k used for operating the brakes, is driven at starting by an auxiliary engine a, e.g. a small diesel engine coupled thereto by a hand or automatically operated clutch. It delivers through a pipe e and non-return valve f into the reservoir g, the reservoir k being also connected to' the pipe e through a non-return valve o and a spring loaded pressure controlled valve s which is held closed by the pressure in the pipe e until the reservoir g is fully charged, when the pressure therein acting through a pipe m on a piston q opens the valve s to allow the compressor b to deliver at lower pressure into the reservoir k. An unloading valve u connects the delivery pipe e to atmosphere when the reservoir k is fully charged, and if the pressure in the reservoir g drops, the valve s closes to cause the compressor b to recharge it. When the engine d is started it drives the compressor through a belt c, the engine a being uncoupled and stopped. If the pressure in the reservoir k drops, a valve i may be opened to re-charge it from the reservoir g.
