Abstract
641,877. Toothed gearing. MORRIS MOTORS, Ltd. Nov. 16, 1948, No. 29722. [Class 80(i)] A worm-wheel B is split into two parts B1, B2, which are resiliently coupled to prevent backlash in the drive to an overhead camshaft A of an internal combustion engine. The main part B1 of the worm-wheel B is secured to the portion Al of the camshaft, the subsidiary part B2 being integral with a sleeve C which is loose on the shaft and abuts against a collar A2. The sleeve C is formed with an internal helical gear D co-operating with a ring-like helical gear E slidably splined to the shaft A1 and axially loaded by a compression spring F. The helix angle of the gears D, E is sufficiently small to prevent reversals of torque in the camshaft A producing relative rotation of the parts B1, B2 in a direction opposite to that in which the spring F urges the gears. The worm G is secured to a vertical drive shaft at the crankshaft end of which the gearing shown is duplicated.
