[Class 144 (ii)] [Also in Group V] Endless helical wire springs a embedded in the tread of a tyre d are formed with kinks or corrugations in each coil to produce a polygonal shape as shown in Fig. 5. Before wear, short transverse portions a<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, of the wire are exposed at the tread-surface, ends a<SP>2</SP>, Fig. 3, of the wires being presented after wear. Preferably, the tread, which is formed separately from the tyre body, is assembled and vulcanized so as to be under circumferential tension when the tyre is free from load. Fig. 4 shows a curing-ring comprising a flexible sheet-metal band b with ribs c to form the circumferential grooves in the tyre tread, a steam-heating coil e being mounted on the exterior of the band. As shown, the helical springs a are preliminarily assembled between the ribs c.
