Abstract

641,722. Valves for fuel-injection pumps. AKTIEBOLAGET ATLAS DIESEL. April 28, 1947, No. 11275. Convention date, May 2, 1946. [Class 102(1)] [Also in Group XXIX] A valve for a press u r e fluid conduit permitting fluid flow in opposite directions, suitable as a delivery valve on fuel injection pumps, comprises a valve housing 6, a passage 11 in the housing of less cross - sectional area than adjacent portions of the conduit situated immediately before, and after said passage, a ball 10 movable through the passage so 'as to substantially close the passage in a certain position, and resilient means, e.g. the springs 14, 17 acting to move the ball to the said position from the adjacent portions of the conduit where the ball allows fluid flow. The spring 17 acts on a ported disc 20 which acts as a seat for the ball when it closes the passage, the disc resting on a stop formed by the valve housing at the end of the bore 9 containing the passage 11. Movement of the ball away from the said position allows fluid to pass through the passage via grooves 12, 13. The spring 17 may have a greater tension than spring 14 and members 23, 24, act as stoppers to prevent undue displacement of the ball. Modifications are described in which the grooves are replaced by ducts or tapering portions of the conduit, each spring acts on a seat for the ball or both springs act directly on the ball, and one of the seats and its spring are enclosed in a retainer as a unit. The ball, spring and spring retaining means may be enclosed in a housing to form a unit.
