Abstract
641,677. Aircraft braking systems. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. Dec. 18, 1947, No. 33371. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXXIV] An aircraft oleo strut provided with means whereby increase of internal fluid pressure in one space in the strut provides a source of pressure for the automatic and independent application of the brakes comprises pilotcontrolled means for relieving the internal pressure by the application of pressure to fluid contained in a second space in the strut. The lower extremity of the strut 7 is slidably carried by an axle bearing sleeve 8 and is formed with an extension 3 of reduced diameter adapted to slide within the sealed end 4 of the sleeve. Sealing rings 9 are provided in the base of the strut 1 and the extension 3 to seal the cylindrical chamber 1 and the annular space 2. The chamber 1, which may be regarded as a master cylinder, contains hydraulic fluid and has a pipe connection 10 with the fluid-operated brakes while the annular space 2 contains hydraulic fluid connected by a pipe 11 to a source of fluid pressure under the control of the pilot. When the aircraft is parked, the brakes are applied by releasing the fluid pressure in the annular space 2 so that the weight of the aircraft is supported by the fluid in the chamber 1, while to release the brakes or to reduce the braking effort the pilot re-admits fluid under pressure to the space 2.
