Abstract

An aqueous emulsion containing more than 25 parts of a polymerized vinyl ester of an aliphatic acid containing from 2 to 6 carbon atoms per 100 parts of water is prepared in the presence of a water-soluble per-compound, a non-polymerizable surface tension depressant and a hydrophilic colloid, the vinyl ester being introduced at such a rate that not more than 25 parts of monomer for every 100 parts of water are present during the polymerization. Vinyl esters specified are vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, valerate and hexoate. Per-compounds specified are potassium or sodium persulphate, sodium or potassium perborate, peracetic acid, sodium, potassium, urea or hydrogen peroxide. The latter compound may be added gradually during the process and may be used in conjunction with ferrous or ferric nitrate, chloride, sulphate, acetate, and benzene or toluene sulphonate. Surface tension depressants specified are sodium oleate or palmitate, potassium stearate, Marseilles soap, diethanol amine laurate, isobutyl naphthalene sulphonic acid, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium dioctyl sulpho-succinate and other sodium salts of sulphonated compounds, and quaternary ammonium compounds. Hydrophilic colloids which may be used are polyvinyl alcohol, hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, soluble starch, glycol and methyl celluloses, gum tragacanth, gum acacia, gum arabic, glue, gelatine, agar-agar, sodium alginate and sodium carboxy methyl cellulose. The pH may be adjusted to between 2 and 7 by mineral acids, aliphatic acids, sulphonic acids or sodium bicarbonate. Diethyl amine ethyl oleylamide acetate may be used as an anti-foam agent. The polymer emulsions may be used to coat wood, cloth, paper, metals and glass. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of vinylidene chloride or bromide, styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, ortho- and para-chlorostyrenes, polychlorostyrenes, methyl vinyl ketone, ethyl vinyl ketone, acrylic and methacrylic acids, methyl and ethyl acrylates, methyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, alone or together, in place of the vinyl esters. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
