Abstract
Polymeric materials are prepared by causing acrylic acid, a -chloracrylic acid, methacrylic acid or their saponifiable derivatives, by themselves or together with one or more other polymerizable compounds containing the group >C=CH- which are not present in preponderating amount, to polymerize in aqueous medium in the presence of persulphuric acid or a water-soluble persulphate and in the presence of a water-soluble compound capable of taking up molecular oxygen. The other polymerizable compounds specified are the esters, nitriles and amides of fumaric and maleic acids, vinyl ethers, vinyl esters of inorganic or organic acids, styrene, unsymmetrical dichlorethylene and butadiene. The persulphate may be the ammonium, sodium or potassium salt, and the compound capable of taking up molecular oxygen may be sulphurous acid or its water-soluble salts, water-soluble hydrosulphites or pyrosulphites, hydroxylamine or hydrazine or their water-soluble salts, thioglycollic acid or its water-soluble salts or addition compounds of aldehydes with salts of oxyacids of sulphur. The aqueous medium may be water or water admixed with another solvent miscible therewith, e.g. ethyl alcohol, and the polymerizable material may be dissolved or dispersed therein, an emulsifying agent being present if desired. Specified emulsifying agents are soaps, water-soluble salts of sulphonated animal and vegetable fats and oils, water-soluble salts of the sulphuric esters of fatty alcohols, and water-soluble colloidal materials such as water-soluble cellulose ethers. Plasticizers, e.g. dibutyl phthalate or tricresyl phosphate may be present during the polymerization. The polymerization may be carried out in a closed vessel or in a vessel from which air is displaced by an inert oxygen-free gas such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide. The polymer may be separated by filtration or by the addition of a solution of sodium chloride. Examples are given of the polymerization of b -ethoxyethyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylic nitrile and methacrylic acid in the presence of ammonium persulphate and sodium hydrosulphite, of the polymerization of acrylic nitrile in the presence of ammonium persulphate and of the polymerization of methyl a -chloroacrylate and of the copolymerization of methyl methacrylate or acrylic nitrile with butadiene in the presence of ammonium persulphate and sodium sulphite.
