Abstract

Vinyl organic esters alone or together with a minor proportion of one or more other specified polymerizable compounds are polymerized in aqueous media in the presence of a water-soluble persulphate and a water-soluble salt of an oxyacid of sulphur with reducing properties. Specified other polymerizable compounds are other polymerizable compounds containing the group <FORM:0574449/IV/1> , e.g. vinyl chloride, unsymmetrical dichlorethylene, styrene and esters (other than vinyl esters), nitriles and amides of acrylic, methacrylic, fumaric and maleic acids. The vinyl organic esters are derived from monocarboxylic acids, specified are formic, acetic, propionic, butyric, lauric, benzoic, methacrylic and monochloracetic acids. Specified persulphates are the ammonium, sodium and potassium salts of peroxydisulphuric acid (J.C.S. 1940, pp. 1408-9), and conveniently 4 per cent based on the aqueous medium is taken. Specified salts of sulphur oxyacids are sulphites, hydrosulphites, bisulphites and thiosulphates, particularly the sodium salts; addition compounds with aldehydes and ketones may also be used, e.g. sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate. The amount of the reducing agent used is such that there is present both persulphate and reducing agent throughout a substantial proportion of the polymerization. The polymerizable material is dispersed and/or dissolved in the aqueous medium, which is preferably weakly alkaline. Emulsifying agents may be used; specified are soaps, water-soluble salts of sulphonated animal and vegetable fats and oils, water-soluble esters of fatty alcohols and water-soluble colloidal materials, e.g. cellulose ethers. Preferably the polymerization is carried out in a closed vessel or one from which the air has been displaced by an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, carbon dioxide. In example vinyl acetate is polymerized in an aqueous dispersion containing sodium bicarbonate, ammonium persulphate, the sodium salt of sulphated sperm oil alcohols and sodium (1) hydrosulphite, (2) bisulphite, ((5) without sodium bicarbonate), (3) sulphite and (11) thiosulphate, in (6) the dispersion contains ammonium persulphate, sodium hydrosulphite and methyl ethyl cellulose, and in (7) polymerization in ethanol-water solution is carried out. Interpolymers of vinyl acetate and (8) vinyl chloride, (9) methyl methacrylate and (10) acrylonitrile are also described.
