Abstract
641,372. Centrifugal pumps. WEIL, W. W. Dec. 3, 1947, No. 31922. Convention date, Dec. 6, 1946. [Class 110(i)] [Also in Group XII] In a pump for conveying molten metal from a bath, all those parts which are immersed in the bath, including the impeller, casing and driving shaft, are of graphite or silicon carbide. The pump casing 5, Fig. 1, rests within a bath of molten aluminium 1 on a base 4, to which it is secured by dowel pins 27. The base may be supported on legs. Metal enters the pump by way of a transverse passage 8 and is discharged through a duct 13 to a conduit 14. To prevent seizing of the pump shaft due to metal passing upwardly around the shaft and solidifying, slots 31 may be formed in the casing 5 to allow the metal to escape. Pump parts in contact with the molten metal are of graphite or silicon carbide, with clay, pitch or tar as a binding material. An air motor 20 drives the pump through a flexible coupling 24 and a split collar 25 which is attached to the shaft 10 by set screws 26. The frame 17 supporting the motor is adjustably attached to the casing 5 by set screws 16. In a modification, Fig. 5, the pump has two separate outlet ducts 43. The casing is made in two interlocking parts 32, 35, the latter also interlocking with the base 38; dowel pins may be used.
