Abstract

641,052. Axial-flow pumps. GILL, J. H. W. July 13, 1948, No. 18798. [Class 110(i)] [Also in Group XXXIII] Means for disintegrating foreign matterwhich may be drawn into the intake of an axial-flow pump comprises a rotary cutting member which co-operates with one or more stationary cutter bars with a shearing action and is disposed between the bar or bars and the pump rotor so as to be rotated by the pre-whirl induced in the pump inlet by the rotor. The pump forms part of a hydraulic jet propulsion apparatus for a waterborne vessel. Two parallel stationary cutter bars E of approximately triangular cross-section carry a boss F which supports a pin F'. A rotary cutting member comprising a hub G, blades G' and a rim G<SP>2</SP> is rotatably mounted on the pin F<SP>1</SP> with the blades G' in shearing relation to the bars E and to the blades B<SP>4</SP> of the rotor B<SP>1</SP>. The upper edges of the blades G<SP>1</SP> may be wavy, as shown. The rotary cutting member is normally rotated by the whirl created by the rotor blades but can also be rotated by a manually operated shaft H through a belt or chain drive H<SP>2</SP>. The drive may serve to apply a small braking force during normal operation. The propulsive jet is discharged through a member D which can be rotated for manoeuvring purposes.
