Abstract

640,623. Elevated railways. FRASER, H. June 14, 1948, No. 15932. [Class 104 (ii)] In an elevated railway of the kind wherein cars are suspended from bogies running on an overhead track, the track comprises two supporting-rails 4, Fig. 5a, inclined outwardly and downwardly with respect to each other, with a guide track 6 in a plane at right angles to each supporting-rail 4 and along the outer edge thereof, the bogies each having two pairs of relatively inclined main wheels 9 which travel on and are normal to the supporting- rails, and two guide wheels 21, Fig. 1, located towards the forward end of the bogie and disposed normal to the guide tracks 6, the car 7 being suspended from a spring suspension carried by each side of the bogie. The track may be supported by a series of braced vertical angle-iron members 1 across the lower ends of which are secured angle-iron beams 2, Fig. 5a, supporting transversely extending beams 3. The beams 2 and 3 support rails or tracks 4 which are inclined downwardly and outwardly at an angle of between eight and twenty degrees to the horizontal, the arrangement being duplicated on two opposite sides of the support 1. The inner edges of the tracks 4 are provided with upwardly turned guide flanges 5 and the faces may be provided with transversely arranged grooves or ridges. In the example the car is supported by two bogies and driven by a propeller 8. Each bogie frame consists of two splayed end-frames 12 of channelsection, and longitudinally extending upper and lower bars 13, 14, the joints between the members 13 and 12 being provided with gusset plates 20 which carry the bearings for the axles 10 of the bogie-wheels 9. The lower ends of the frame 12 at the front of the bogie carry brackets 22 supporting bearings for the vertical axles of the guide-wheels 21. Each point of suspension between the bogie and car includes a universal coupling within a channelled rectangular frame 37 with its shorter sides supported by shackles 38a from leaf springs 39. The bogies may be provided with a braking system as described in Specification 640,620, (Group XXXIV].
