Abstract

640,440. Tablet-moulding machines. FORGROVE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and BROOK, L. July 6, 1948, No. 18143. [Class 87 (ii)] In apparatus comprising a moving train of moulds for moulding from a rope of plastic material a string of tablets each joined to the next by a thin web, means are provided for stopping the movement of the moulds should the string of tablets fail to leave the moulds after being formed. As described, a rope 17 of plastic material is led between co-operating sets of moulds 10, 13, one set being formed on the periphery of a wheel 11 and the other moulds being in the form of flaps pivoted on a chain or a second wheel and being moved towards the wheel 11 to form the tablets by a cam 16. A second cam 18 moves the moulds 13 away from the wheel 11 after the tablets have been moulded, the string of tablets 19 being led away by a conveyer 20 past a trip member 21 pivoted at 27 to a bracket 24 adjustably and releasably secured by a screw 26 on a slide 25 fixed to the machine. Should the string 19 of formed tablets tend to stick in the moulds and be carried round to the entry point of the rope 17, they will be intercepted by the member 21 which will be tilted about its pivot 27 against a spring 28. An adjustable screw 31 carried by the member 21 will thus be made to press against a stop 32 on a pivoted member 33 which will thus be tilted about its pivot 35 against a spring 34. A mercury switch carried by the member 33 will thus be opened to intercept the energizing circuit to the switch gear of the motor during the machine. The machine is thus stopped. The member 21 and bracket 24 may readily be removed for cleaning by releasing the screw 26. The mercury switch may be employed to operate a driving clutch or trip gear, instead of a motor controller, in order to interrupt the moulding members or the trip member may operate a purely mechanical trip gear for this purpose. The apparatus may include cams for causing inward movement of lateral dies to mould or emboss the ends of the tablets as described in Specification 406,220. The invention may be applied to machines in which the travelling train of moulds is constituted by cavities in a moulding chain. Specification 513,277 also is referred to.
