[Class 8(i)] A multi-stage compressor having a common crankshaft 19 driven through worm gearing 22, 23, from a main shaft 24 comprises two first and second stage cylinders 1 disposed on either side of the shaft 24 and the third stage cylinders 9 disposed at right angles to the cylinders 1 and parallel to the shaft 24. Common inter-stage coolers 25, 26 between the first and second and second and third stages, together with a high pressure receiver 27 are located in the angle between the cylinders 1 and 9.
