639,035. Portable boring-bar machines. WARD, M. M. April 30, 1948, No. 11833. [Class 83 (iii)] A boring-bar 10 of the kind which is fed by means of a nut 27 mounted on a lead-screw 22, the nut being rotated by pawl-and-ratchet mechanism including a toothed wheel 28 rotating with the nut, and the pawl 36 being reciprocated by an eccentric 31 on the boring- bar, is characterized in that the lead-screw is held against rotation by readily releasable. locking means, the pawl is arranged to be rendered easily inoperative, and means are provided for resisting rotation of the nut, so that the boring-bar can be fed by rotating the leadscrew. The locking means comprises a pin 50 movable into or out of a recess in a graduated dial 49 provided on the lead-screw, the dial co-operating with an index on a bracket 24 to indicate the amount of feed. The means for resisting rotation of the nut comprises a spring- pressed plunger 43 adapted to enter the spaces between the teeth of the wheel 28. The pawl 36 forms part of a spring-pressed plunger 35 mounted in a carrier' 29 and carrying a pin 38 engageable with either of two perpendicular grooves 39, 40 in the carrier so that the pawl can be readily disengaged from the wheel 28. The boring-bar is journalled in a frame 16 movable along the lead screw. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), a friction brake is provided between the nut and the frame.
