Abstract

638,597. Surface hardening. ENGVALL, K. A. Dec. 29, 1947, No. 34379. Convention date, May 29,1946. [Class 72] Rollers and rings for roller bearings formed of hardenable steel are machined to final dimensions and surface hardened by applying induction heating for such time that the depth of penetration of the heating is not more than one-fifth of the radial thickness and allowing the heated portion to cool by radiation and conduction to the inner, unheated, portion of the part. As shown, the inner race 10 of a roller bearing is surrounded by an induction coil 20, the inner face of which is shaped to conform to the surface 16 of the bearing. Current to the coil is cut off when a layer amounting to one-fifth of the radial thickness of the metal has been heated. The guiding flange 18 may also be hardened. Known roller bearing steels or unalloyed carbon steel may be used.
