Abstract

1332305 Making gears and bearing races SKF (UK) Ltd 12 Nov 1970 [28 Nov 1969] 58350/69 Heading B3A Sulphide and brittle inclusions affecting the fatigue-life of parts such as gears and the racerings of ball-bearings are reduced, after the part is formed to shape but before it is finishmachined or hardened by heat-treatment, by remelting at least one zone on the surface of the part by means of an energy beam while the part is in a vacuum. Case-hardening, or throughhardening steels may be surface-melted by an electron beam 13 which may scan across the surface, or the work 12 may be re-positioned to provide overlapping zones. To prevent crack propagation, the whole workpiece may be preheated before the re-melting stage.
